...The Environment
Los Tolmos is a special place, and we're working to keep it that way. We strive to recycle what we can and offset what we cant. Part of the cost of your break goes toward tree planting in the area and other conservational activities.
Tree-Planting
We are engaged with the local forestry agent in re-introducing rarer species of trees back into the area.
We're planting "Quejigo" (Oaks - Quercus Faginea); "Mostajo" (Chequer Trees - Sorbus Torminalis); "Tejo" (Yews - Taxus Baccata); and "Rastrera" (Junipers - Juniperus Sabina), amongst others. These are being planted throughout the grounds and on the reclaimed terraces. We're also planting these randomly around the area to encourage the original diversity of mixed deciduous and evergreen forests rather than the now mostly single species pines. These typically mediterranean trees are very slow growing and have largely disappeared due to human activity. Pines trees grow quickly and so start to dominate the landscapes as the slower growing trees succumb to animal damage, land clearances, and other natural threats (fire, lightening, disease). Some protection is now in places for these grand old trees, particularly Oaks and Sabinas.
Carbon Offsetting
We also reccomend visitors make a donation to offset the carbon impact of travel. This can be calculated here.
Local Sourcing
We support local produce growers and when possible we purchase our bread, eggs, fruit, vegetables and honey from the local village markets.
