...Health & Safety

Spain has a refreshing attitude toward safety: “que sera, sera”: what will be, will be. This attitude manifests itself in many ways: most obvious is running madly in front of huge bulls, loading scooters like transit vans, electricity distribution. Construction sites can be interesting, food service in local bars is always colourful.

This natural common-sense approach to life is a refreshing change from the usually over-officious, over-regulated, cotton-wool approach that most other western communities have come to expect, or have thrust upon them.

For mountain biking in rural spain, this natural approach means: "be prepared, because help will be slow or not at all. You engage in adventure activities in remote areas at your own risk".

Of course, the risks in rural Spain are no different than they are in your own back-yard.  The difference is the remote element, often in black-out zones for mobiles, either through being in deep valleys or miles from the nearest mast.  Although rides are supported by 4x4 vehicle, you could still have a long wait.  Accidents can happen, helmet wear is compulsory, as is the carrying of a personal first-aid kit.
