Ergon Performance Series Grips
Teutonic Bar Technology
We first saw these at Mountain Mayhem 2005 and have been using them ever since. All our bikes are fitted with them. We use the “Performance Series” Grip (for men).On first look these seemed “odd” but with an instant visual appeal that conveyed their function. Holding the grips, even when still stuck to the package, gave a pleasing tactile feel. The weight felt right, comfortable in the hand, and aesthetically designed as well. These just had to work.
They were placed on the bike before Mayhem started. A quick pootle around the paddock and they certainly felt right. Racing with them certainly provided more control and much less fatigue on the wrists. We’ve been converted ever since.
We occasionally ride bikes that haven’t been fitted with Ergon grips and you have an immediate sense of “vulnerability”. The wrists feel weakened and the bars feel flimsy. Of course, this could be just a subjective feeling based on habitual use, but emotional response plays a big part in being comfortable and confident on the bike. These grips make us feel comfortable and confident.
On the down side, they don’t grip the bar as well as grips with “lock-ons”. Difficult climbs or technical sections which require a good grunt or tug on the bars can induce a twist, but this is rare and resolved with a quick nip of the single allen bolt.
The grips have worn well, our oldest now approaching 2 years of abuse. The pads still look pretty good and continue to provide lots of glove traction.
Overall, in our opinion a great accessory for the long distance rider.
