Marmotte 2010 - Race Summary
A great event. Perfect weather, inspiring landscapes, fantastic riding. No idea how many riders signed-up, but race numbers were up to the mid 8000’s! Some 5206 got official finish times. That’s quite an attrition rate. Winning time this year was 5hrs, 46minutes, Lanterne Rouge was 13hrs 43minutes.
My Garmin stats seem a bit confused, but I got 175k, with 5,275m of climbing. Official time was either 8:31:47.40, or 9hrs and a few minutes. The difference is the suspended timing off the Glandon for “safety reasons”. GC was 1831/5206, not bad.
Ride wasn’t as damaging as all pre-hype led me to believe, and fear. Tough and long, but training and preparation seemed to have paid off. To be honest, I think I could have tried harder, but not knowing what to expect, I kept some in reserve for the Alpe d’Huez at the finish. Corvid was excellent; comfortable, forgiving, fast, light. Campagnolo Super Record worked flawlessly, shifting was sure, faultless. I think nutrition and preparation are probably biggest factors to making it around the circuit without stopping under trees for shade or gasping for breath on the Galibier. A great event, and well worth the time, effort and cost of taking part.
